ACEN’s Updates from the World Circular Economy Forum 2025

ACEN Networking at WCEF 2025

Before this year's WCEF2025, ACEN hosted an African reception the evening prior to the kickoff of the Forum to inspire informal gathering and networking. WCEF Day 1

The WCEF2025 launched with stunning views of Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo as Former Finnish President Tarja Halonen delivered a powerful message: circular economy must embrace gender inclusivity to truly transform our world which links well back to the findings of the JUST2CE project. 

ACEN and Circular Economy Coalition for Latin America and the Caribbean shared inspiring water circularity solutions from Rwanda and Peru, showcasing the Global South’s leading innovations. Sessions buzzed with excitement around Latin America's bioeconomy potential and the call for a Global Material Stewardship initiative by IRP’s co-chairs. 

World Circular Economy Forum 2025 - Day 2

Day two highlighted that intra-African trade sits at only 15%, revealing how circular economy principles could play a pivotal role in enhancing continental commerce and strengthening Africa's value chains.

ACEN, in collaboration with partners, led a dynamic accelerator session on Circular Food Systems for Rwanda, bringing together diverse voices from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. The consensus was clear: collaboration is our superpower for driving circular transitions!

Through our central role in CIRF, we're creating tangible impact with SMEs on the ground, with exciting expansion plans across Africa via the ACE4Food initiative. The ACE4Food initiative will work towards expanding the success of the CIRF project to other African countries, by accelerating circularity in the Agrifood sector.

WCEF Accelerator Sessions Day 3 and Day 4

Days three and four featured the most numerous and diverse Accelerator Sessions to date, launching innovative finance tools and seeing ACEN's participation in the Global Circularity Protocol session led by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

Brewing Circular Solutions for Coffee Waste

ACEN, together with partners, organised this official WCEF2025 side event to explore how circular economy principles can transform the coffee industry by reducing waste, creating new revenue streams, and addressing socio-economic and environmental challenges, with insights from ACEN, Nzatu, C4CEC, and Rwandan SMEs.

Circular Zambia Side Event

On 22 May 2025 over 150 participants from 25+ nationalities gathered at the Circular Zambia Forum 2025 at Alliance Française in Lusaka. Organized by Circular Zambia with ACEN under the EU GREENTech4CE program, the event focused on "Unlocking Circular Business Opportunities in Zambia: Mining, Manufacturing & Energy. The Forum highlighted how Zambian innovators are already leading with viable circular solutions that: improve operational efficiency and reduce costs, strengthen local economies that are less vulnerable to global shocks, and deliver benefits for profit, people, and the planet. A massive shout out goes to the ACEN Zambia Chapter lead Andrew McNaught and his team for organising this Forum. 

ACEN Highlights

CIRF Financial Readiness Workshop

As part of the Circular Food Systems for Rwanda (CIRF) program, ACEN organised a Financial Readiness Workshop on May 27, 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda. The workshop provided an interactive platform where SMEs worked through tailored financial examples based on their own businesses. This hands-on approach enabled participants to contextualise key concepts such as strategic business planning, financial management, and investment readiness. The SMEs left the workshop with improved financial literacy, practical tools, and greater confidence to navigate the financial aspects of their circular business journeys. This workshop acted as a kickoff session for the business development support that SMEs will receive during the next three months through ACEN and a dedicated service provider. This support will include, among others, assistance with grant and loan applications, financial management and approaching potential investors.

Circular South Africa - “Breaking Silos” Session 

Inspiring, awesome, meaningful and engaging were only a few of the comments Circular South Africa’s participants left to describethe “Breaking the Silos” session, which happened on 22 May 2025. As part of its core pillars, Circular South Africa (CSA) is creating a collaborative platform for stakeholders to easier and naturally connect with one another and enable partnerships. This session allowed participants to present and network amongst each other. The session was highly engaging and boasted a great turnout of participants. New “Circular Transition Indicators” Guide 

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development has just launched the Circular Transition Indicators (CTI) Social Impact Guide. The guide dives deep into connecting social impacts with a transition towards a circular economy. ACEN supported the development of the guide as part of the advisory board, drawing on our experience from the JUST2CE project.

EU Green Week Partner Event

This partner event of the EU Green Week, hosted by the African Circular Economy Network (ACEN), the African Circular Economy Alliance (ACEA) and EU Delegation to Zambia, will focus on sharing locally-developed African solutions and challenges in e-waste management, which will include examining policies that support circularity in the electronics sector across the continent. Panelists and speakers of this event highlight emerging business models and market opportunities that transform waste challenges into economic advantages. A key component of the discussions will be exploring how the European Union and African nations can collaborate effectively to promote mutually more circularity based lifecycle planning in electronics. Join us on Thursday, 12th June 2025 from 13:00 to 14:30.

CE Training for Engineers and Manufacturers

ACEN, in partnership with the University of the Free State (UFS) is running a series of Training Courses for those in the manufacturing, engineering, and related-services (mer) sector looking to create stronger business offerings. Embracing circular economy principles can help you close the loops on your business processes, access new profit pools, increase supply chain resilience, and find new demand for your products and services.

Over two days, facilitator Susanne Karcher will guide you through seven modules aimed at empowering engineering and manufacturing professionals with skills related to the circular economy. By the end, you will understand economic and technical trends, identify opportunities for strategic interventions, and enhance your business processes for improved effectiveness.

Celebrating SRI’s Impact in South Africa

On May 21, 2025, leading figures from government, industry, academia, and civil society gathered at the Switzerland Residence in Pretoria to mark the successful close of the Sustainable Recycling Industries (SRI) Programme in South Africa. Over its five-year run, SRI made significant strides in the country’s e-waste management, including supporting the development and official release of the Draft National WEEE Policy, introducing WEEE Norms and Standards to set the stage for future regulations, creating practical tools such as the Municipal WEEE Compass and Small-Scale E-Waste Facility Framework, and launching the WEEEareSA platform for awareness and stakeholder engagement. With SRI’s conclusion, the focus now shifts to integrating these achievements into ongoing e-waste management efforts, while preparations are underway for a new project; the Circular Economy Initiative, funded by SECO and managed by the same team, with ACEN as the official project management partner.

Circular Economy News in Africa

Africa: Transitioning to a Circular Economy

Marcos Neto, UN Assistant Secretary General and Director of UNDP’s Bureau for Policy and Programme Support, calls for an urgent global transition from a linear to a circular economy to combat environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, and escalating waste. He outlines five priority actions: implementing bold regulations, improving data and metrics, incentivizing innovation, investing in infrastructure, and driving a cultural shift toward regenerative consumption. Drawing on examples from countries like Viet Nam, the Dominican Republic, and Serbia, Neto illustrates the practical benefits of circular practices and urges collective, immediate action to build a more sustainable and resilient future.

Circular Economy Principles for a Zero-Waste Future

At a recent seminar hosted by the Sustainable Aquatic and Environmental Network (SAYNE), in collaboration with Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and Ifrique Eco Solutions, Nigerian circular economy expert Tairat Abiola Titiloye emphasised the potential of circular economy principles to drive sustainable innovation and reduce waste. She highlighted how practices like upcycling and recycling can help businesses cut costs while minimising environmental impact. Titiloye also underscored the value of international partnerships in adopting circular models, suggesting that such collaborations can inspire local enterprises to implement more sustainable practices. The event aimed to educate individuals, businesses, and communities on practical strategies to achieve a zero-waste future through the adoption of circular economy concepts.

Beauty in the Bin: Transitioning from Food Waste to Wellness

Touché Beauty, a Kenyan brand, is pioneering sustainable beauty by transforming organic waste and overripe fruits into luxurious wellness products. Embracing circular economy principles, the company aims to reduce food waste while promoting eco-friendly skincare solutions. This innovative approach not only addresses environmental concerns but also offers consumers high-quality, sustainable alternatives in the beauty industry.

Sustainability for Social Needs

Ghanaian innovator, entrepreneur and educationist, Makafui Awuku designs desks from plastic waste. In a recent post the founder of Mckintorch Africa celebrated their new milestone. These desks, designed from plastic boards and lumber were a result of years of research and design. But the most inspiring part of the story is that these desks are going to be serving students who have no desks to use in school. This new innovation is an inspiring addition to Mckintorch Africa’s already creative collection of work made from plastic waste including; footwears, bags, Christmas trees, customised waste and plastic collection bins and a recent designer wall clock in collaboration with Caveman.

World Recycling Convention 2025

The 3rd World Recycling Convention, also known as Recycling Week 2025, is set to take place from October 29–31 in Barcelona, Spain. This premier international event will convene global experts, innovators, and industry leaders to explore advancements in recycling, e-waste management, and sustainable technologies. Under the theme “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Challenges and Creative Solutions,” the convention will feature keynote talks, B2B networking sessions, and panel discussions aimed at fostering collaboration and driving progress toward a circular economy. Attendees will engage in strategic dialogues and knowledge exchange, contributing to the development of actionable solutions for a more sustainable future.

Forum mondial de l’économie circulaire 2025 - Jour 1

Le WCEF2025 s’est ouvert avec une vue imprenable sur le parc Ibirapuera à São Paulo, alors que l’ancienne présidente finlandaise Tarja Halonen a livré un message fort : l’économie circulaire doit être inclusive en matière de genre pour transformer véritablement notre monde – un message en écho avec les résultats du projet JUST2CE.

ACEN et la Coalition de l’Amérique latine et des Caraïbes pour l’économie circulaire ont présenté des solutions inspirantes autour de la circularité de l’eau au Rwanda et au Pérou, mettant en lumière les innovations pionnières du Sud global. Les sessions ont mis l’accent sur le potentiel de la bioéconomie en Amérique latine et l’appel des coprésidents de l’IRP en faveur d’une initiative mondiale sur la gestion responsable des matériaux.

Forum Mondial de l’Économie Circulaire 2025 - Jours 2

La deuxième journée a souligné que le commerce intra-africain ne représente que 15 %, illustrant le rôle que peut jouer l’économie circulaire pour renforcer les chaînes de valeur et les échanges intra-africains.

ACEN et ses partenaires ont dirigé une session d’accélération dynamique sur les systèmes alimentaires circulaires au Rwanda, réunissant des voix d’Amérique latine, des Caraïbes, d’Afrique et d’Asie. Le message était clair : la collaboration est notre super-pouvoir pour faire avancer la transition circulaire !

Grâce à son rôle dans le programme CIRF, ACEN a un impact concret auprès des PME sur le terrain, avec une expansion prévue dans toute l’Afrique grâce à l’initiative ACE4Food, qui vise à reproduire le succès du CIRF dans d’autres pays africains en accélérant la circularité du secteur agroalimentaire

Ces journées ont offert les sessions d’accélération les plus nombreuses et diverses à ce jour, incluant le lancement de nouveaux outils financiers et la participation d’ACEN à la session sur le Protocole mondial de circularité du Conseil mondial des entreprises pour le développement durable.

Brasser des Solutions Circulaires pour les Déchets de Café

ACEN et ses partenaires ont organisé un événement parallèle officiel au WCEF2025 sur la manière dont les principes de l’économie circulaire peuvent transformer l’industrie du café, réduire les déchets, créer de nouvelles sources de revenus et résoudre les défis sociaux et environnementaux. Interventions d’ACEN, Nzatu, C4CEC et des PME rwandaises.

Événement Parallèle : Circular Zambia

Le Mai 22, 2025, plus de 150 participants de plus de 25 pays ont assisté au Forum Circular Zambia 2025 à l’Alliance française de Lusaka. Organisé par Circular Zambia et ACEN dans le cadre du programme GREENTech4CE financé par l’UE, l’événement avait pour thème : Libérer le potentiel circulaire en Zambie : Mines, Industrie et Énergie.

Le forum a mis en avant des solutions circulaires locales menées par des innovateurs zambiens. Ces solutions augmentent l’efficacité, réduisent les coûts, stimulent les économies locales et profitent à la planète, aux populations et aux profits.

Atelier CIRF : Préparation Financière

Dans le cadre du programme CIRF, ACEN a organisé un atelier interactif à Kigali le Mai 27, 2025. Les PME ont travaillé sur des exemples financiers réels adaptés à leur activité. Objectif : renforcer la planification stratégique, la gestion financière et la préparation à l’investissement.

Les participants repartent avec de nouveaux outils pratiques, une meilleure littératie financière et plus de confiance. L’atelier marque le début d’un accompagnement de 3 mois : demandes de financement, gestion financière et recherche d’investisseurs.

Nous sommes inspirés par l’engagement et les progrès de ces PME et impatients de voir leur impact sur les systèmes agroalimentaires circulaires au Rwanda.

 Le Mai 22, 2025, Circular South Africa a animé une session intitulée « Briser les silos ». Elle a été décrite comme inspirante, puissante et engageante par les participants. Cet événement partenaire de la Semaine verte de l'UE, organisé par le Réseau africain pour l'économie circulaire (ACEN), l'Alliance africaine pour l'économie circulaire (ACEA) et la délégation de l'UE en Zambie, se concentrera sur le partage de solutions et de défis africains développés localement en matière de gestion des déchets électroniques. Il inclura l'examen des politiques qui soutiennent la circularité dans le secteur électronique sur l'ensemble du continent. Les panélistes et intervenants de cet événement mettront en lumière les modèles commerciaux émergents et les opportunités de marché qui transforment les défis liés aux déchets en avantages économiques. Formation sur l’Économie Circulaire pour Ingénieurs et Industriels

En partenariat avec l’Université de l’État Libre, ACEN propose une formation de 2 jours à destination des professionnels de l’industrie, animée par Susanne Karcher. Les participants découvriront 7 modules pour identifier les tendances, repérer les leviers d’intervention et optimiser les processus.

Célébration de l’Impact du Programme SRI

Le Mai 21, 2025, à la Résidence de Suisse à Pretoria, des leaders ont célébré les résultats du programme Sustainable Recycling Industries (SRI) en Afrique du Sud. Résultats : politique nationale sur les DEEE, normes, outils pratiques (WEEE Compass, cadre PME), plateforme WEEEareSA.

Une nouvelle initiative financée par le SECO – l’Initiative Économie Circulaire – a été lancée, avec ACEN comme partenaire officiel.

Durabilité au Service des Besoins Sociaux

L'innovateur, entrepreneur et éducateur ghanéen Makafui Awuku conçoit des bureaux à partir de déchets plastiques. Dans un récent article, le fondateur de Mckintorch Africa a célébré cette nouvelle étape importante. Ces bureaux, conçus à partir de planches de plastique et de bois, sont le fruit d'années de recherche et de conception. Mais le plus inspirant, c'est que ces bureaux seront utilisés par les élèves qui n'en ont pas à l'école. Cette innovation vient enrichir la collection déjà créative de Mckintorch Africa, composée de chaussures, de sacs, de sapins de Noël, de poubelles personnalisées et d'une horloge murale design récemment créée en collaboration avec Caveman.

La 3e Convention Mondiale du Recyclage, également connue sous le nom de Recycling Week 2025, se tiendra du 29 au 31 Octobre à Barcelone, en Espagne.
