Circular South Africa: Become a member and a partner

Circular South Africa officially launched its website. Individuals who want to connect to other circular economy stakeholders can register online as members (at no cost) which also allows them (after being vetted) to upload (after being vetted)  knowledge items, share innovative business ideas  and disseminate circular economy events for the country. Partners are organisations that can feature their circular economy journey on the website as well as their CE products and services. The website is the first stab at a tool to establish a clearing house for all CE related information and enable high impact networking, matchmaking, knowledge sharing and collaboration. 

Circular Food Systems For Rwanda: Call For: ”Technical Assistance Providers”

The Circular Food Systems for Rwanda Project provides SMEs in Rwanda with an incredible opportunity to access the support, education, technical assistance and networking needed to create and implement successful and sustainable circular business models.

The program will be working with shortlisted SMEs and we are now searching for Technical Assistance Providers that can fulfil the technical needs of the SMEs in Cohort 2. If you are registered to operate as a practitioner in Rwanda, please consider applying with the link below.

The ideal Technical Assistance Provider should have:

• Hands-on experience working with the target business models, value chains, and waste streams

• Deep technical knowledge of circular business models and best practices in the agri-food sector

• A successful track record working with both start-ups and growth-stage SMEs.

The deadline for application is Friday, May 10, 2024.

JUST2CE South African Workshops

In April African Circular Economy Network (ACEN) hosted JUST2CE close-out workshops in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The Horizon2020 funded project will come to an end in August this year and has contributed to better understand how and why  the current (mostly Global South dominated) circular economy discourse does currently not take enough the social dimensions such as gender, environmental justice and labour into consideration . 

Each workshop was rounded off by visiting an initiative based strongly on “just circular economy” principles. In Johannesburg, we visited Palesa Pads, founded and run by Sherie de Wet and in Cape Town, we visited FoodForward SA, led by Andy Du Plessis.

ACEN and ACENF Participate in WCEF 2024

The African Circular Economy Network and the ACEN Foundation participated in various aspects of the recent WCEF 2024, held in Brussels, Belgium. The two organisations represented and presented the African perspective and progress in the transition to the circular economy. ACEN will especially support the continuation of the Global South Roundtable, organised by ICCE.

• Katharina Gihring, presented on the JUST2CE  project during an engagement on April 17, 2024 with policymakers and ambassadors which focused on the just transition.

• Circular Food Systems for Rwanda (CIRF) supports small and medium-sized enterprises to adopt circular business models or improve upon existing practices. ACEN is managing a network of technical assistance providers to implement tailored support with the selected SMEs. Alongside this work, the program aims to establish an enabling policy environment to drive forward the systemic transformation of the food value chain towards greater circularity in Rwanda. At the World Circular Economy Forum, Chris Whyte (ACEN Director) and Peter Desmond (ACEN Co-Founder) attended as ACEN representatives for the CIRF project.

• Josefine Koehler joined a panel session organised by the Chatham House, UNIDO  and Trinomics to share insights from ACENF’s experience in designing circular economy roadmaps with African countries: Ghana, Nigeria, and Rwanda.

South Africa's Science and Innovation Department Launches Circular Minerals, Metals Initiative

South Africa's Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) have unveiled the first of three collaborative circular economy initiatives. These initiatives, outlined in the 2022 to 2032 decadal plan, aim to revolutionise key economic sectors by promoting circular practices. The inaugural initiative, the South African Circular Minerals and Metals Initiative (SACMMI) was recently launched in Pretoria, with the South African Circular Agricultural Initiative (SACAI) and the South African Circular Manufacturing Initiative (SACMI) to follow suit.

With government, industry, and civil society joining forces, South Africa is poised to lead the way in circular economy innovation, unlocking new opportunities for growth and development across the continent.

ACEN Foundation’s Black Soldier Fly Project

ACEN Foundation embarked on a new project raising awareness about Black Soldier Fly Technology, testing its feasibility in selected locations in Cote d’Ivoire, Uganda and Ethiopia. Piotr Barczak, ACEN Foundation’s Program Manager shared more details about this project at the recent WCEF 2024 where Piotr Barczak, brings samples of BSF to the panel discussion. ACEN to Contribute African Perspective to AfricaMaVal

AfricaMaVal (AMV) is an EU-Horizon funded project, aiming to develop an EU-Africa partnership ensuring responsible sourcing of mineral resources for the European industry while granting a sustainable local co-development for European and African companies. Three workshops are organised via the WRF & other partners with the first online session on Tuesday, May 28 2024 at 9:00-10:30 CET. It is primarily organised for AfricaMaVal internal partners, but also other relevant partners will be invited. ACEN (as represented by Susanne Karcher) is proud to contribute to the panel discussions focusing on African recycling country profiles as well as the opportunities for improving secondary raw materials value chains. African Solutions: Agroecological Fertiliser for Healthy Soils & Healthy Communities

The African Union and the Republic of Kenya are organising a summit dedicated to soil health and fertilisers from May 7-9, 2024, in Nairobi. In conjunction with this event, the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) has been granted the opportunity by the AU to host a 90-minute side event on May 8 and manage an exhibition space throughout the summit. To prepare for this, a 2-hour long webinar and press conference has been scheduled for Friday, May 3, 2024, at 14:00 CET. This session is designed to refine the collective approach and prepare responses for the summit.

The webinar will cover a range of topics including the drawbacks of traditional industrial agriculture and the advantages of adopting agroecology, the role of local governments in advancing agroecological policies, and the processes involved in the production, certification, and testing of biofertilisers within Kenya and Zambia. Additionally, Kenya's holistic farming system strategies and the transition towards agroecology will be delved into. The discussions will also highlight the relationship between soil health and climate change, the progress in bio-fertiliser technology in Africa, and biofertiliser-related research in Southern Africa.

Open Call 2024: AGYLE is looking for 40 Young Leaders

AGYLE, the African-German Young Leaders programme, has entered into its fourth round and is inviting applications from talented young leaders from Ethiopia, Ghana, Rwanda, Senegal, Tunisia, and Germany. This year, the AGYLE programme’s working topic is; Circular Economy – How young leaders are shaping the transformation. The programme is directed at young leaders aged 40 and below who are taking proactive roles in shaping the transition towards a circular economy and are working on innovative solutions in sectors such as textile, construction, electronics, packaging and food. Deadline for application is Sunday, May 12, 2024.

The ASSP Grants

The U.S. Embassy in Abuja has opened a competition for organisations to submit proposals to carry out projects through the Ambassador’s Special Self-Help (ASSH) Small Grants Program. Eligible organisations include legally registered and Nigeria-based non-governmental and not-for-profit organisations, and established, local, grassroots groups. The ASSH would award 10 grants to small projects with a maximum budget of USD 7000. The application deadline is Friday, May 31, 2024.

The Circular Programme for African Innovators  

The AfriCircular Innovators Programme is an initiative by the African Development Bank’s Africa Circular Economy Facility (ACEF) and the African Circular Economy Alliance (ACEA), intended to advance Africa’s circular economy. The programme will play a key role in invigorating the economic vitality of Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), in Africa. The implementing organisation, Impact HUB will support young entrepreneurs from three countries – Rwanda, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana to facilitate growth and vitalise Africa’s Green Growth. Applications are open until Sunday, May 26, 2024.

ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) 

In January 2024, ACEN Foundation started a project with the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) entitled "Regional Pilot Project on Circular Economy -Transition to a Clean Energy Circular Economy through the Optimization of High Energy Intensity Value Chains in High Impact Sectors". The project countries are Benin, Nigeria and Senegal. The first part of the project will be dedicated to identifying the most relevant value chains to implement clean and circular energy solutions. The second part will be focused on recommending clean and circular energy solutions for these specific value chains. As a part of this project, workshops will be organised in each country of focus with relevant stakeholders from the energy and agriculture sectors. 

Participants of WCEF2024 Visited the Year 2027!

As part of the preparation for the WCEF2024, Sitra rallied over 100 participants of the World Circular Economy Forum for a simulation session. The participants together imagined, experienced and designed one possible future. They conducted a national circular lifestyle experiment in 2027. This session was joined by Susanne Karcher, co-founder of ACEN. The team produced a report from the engagements with participants.  

Africa’s Skills in Repair and Repurposing a Crucial Strategy for Circular Economy

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation published a report on one of Africa’s ancient skills of making the most of materials through the repair and repurpose. The article sheds light on the initiatives of African entrepreneurs commercialising this skill, the opportunities that it presents in the circular economy and most importantly how the Global North could learn from this example

Circulaire Afrique du Sud :Devenez Membre et Partenaire

L'Afrique du Sud circulaire a officiellement lancé son site web. Les personnes souhaitant se connecter à d'autres acteurs de l'économie circulaire peuvent s'inscrire en ligne en tant que membres (gratuitement), ce qui leur permet également de télécharger (après avoir été vérifiés) des éléments de connaissances et de diffuser des événements sur l'économie circulaire pour le pays. Les partenaires sont des organisations qui peuvent présenter leur parcours en économie circulaire sur le site web. Le site web est la première tentative d'outil pour établir une plateforme pour toutes les informations liées à l'EC et permettre un réseautage, un appariement, un partage de connaissances et une collaboration à fort impact.

Systèmes Alimentaires Circulaires pour le Rwanda : Appel aux "Fournisseurs D'Assistance Technique"

Le projet Systèmes alimentaires circulaires pour le Rwanda offre aux PME au Rwanda une opportunité incroyable d'accéder au soutien, à l'éducation, à l'assistance technique et au réseautage nécessaires pour créer et mettre en œuvre des modèles commerciaux circulaires réussis et durables.

Le programme travaillera avec des PME présélectionnées et nous recherchons maintenant des fournisseurs d'assistance technique qui peuvent répondre aux besoins techniques des PME de la cohorte 2. Si vous êtes enregistré pour exercer en tant que praticien au Rwanda, veuillez envisager de postuler avec le lien ci-dessous.

Le fournisseur d'assistance technique idéal devrait avoir :

• Une expérience pratique avec les modèles commerciaux ciblés, les chaînes de valeur et les flux de déchets

• Une connaissance technique approfondie des modèles commerciaux circulaires et des meilleures pratiques dans le secteur agroalimentaire

• Un historique de réussite avec les start-ups et les PME en croissance.

Ateliers Sud-Africains JUST2CE

En Avril, le Réseau africain de l'économie circulaire (ACEN) a organisé des ateliers de clôture JUST2CE à Johannesburg et au Cap. Le projet financé par Horizon2020 prendra fin en août de cette année et a contribué à une meilleure compréhension de la raison pour laquelle le discours actuel sur l'économie circulaire (principalement dominé par le Sud global) ne prend pas suffisamment en compte les dimensions sociales telles que le genre, la justice environnementale et le travail.

Chaque atelier s'est terminé par la visite d'une initiative fortement axée sur les principes de "l'économie circulaire juste". À Johannesburg, nous avons visité Palesa Pads, fondée et dirigée par Sherie de Wet et au Cap, nous avons visité FoodForward SA, dirigé par Andy Du Plessis.

ACEN et ACENF participent au WCEF 2024

Le Réseau africain de l'économie circulaire et la Fondation ACEN ont participé à divers aspects du récent WCEF 2024, qui s'est tenu à Bruxelles, en Belgique. Le Département des Sciences et de L'Innovation de L'Afrique du Sud Lance L'Initiative Circulaire Minéraux, Métaux

Le Département des Sciences et de l'innovation (DSI) de l'Afrique du Sud et le Conseil de la recherche scientifique et industrielle (CSIR) ont dévoilé la première de trois initiatives collaboratives en économie circulaire. Ces initiatives, décrites dans le plan décennal 2022-2032, visent à révolutionner les principaux secteurs économiques en promouvant des pratiques circulaires. Projet Black Soldier Fly de la Fondation ACEN

La Fondation ACEN a lancé un nouveau projet visant à sensibiliser à la technologie de la mouche soldat noire, à en tester la faisabilité dans des endroits sélectionnés en Côte d'Ivoire, en Ouganda et en Éthiopie. Piotr Barczak, directeur de programme de la Fondation ACEN, a partagé plus de détails sur ce projet lors du récent WCEF 2024 où Piotr Barczak a apporté des échantillons de BSF à la discussion de panel. ACEN Contribuera à la Perspective Africaine à AfricaMaVal

AfricaMaVal (AMV) est un projet financé par l'UE-Horizon, visant à développer un partenariat UE-Afrique garantissant l'approvisionnement responsable en ressources minérales pour l'industrie européenne tout en garantissant un co-développement local durable pour les entreprises européennes et africaines.

Trois ateliers sont organisés via le WRF et d'autres partenaires avec la première session en ligne le Mardi Mai, 28 2024 à 9h00-10h30 CET. Il est principalement organisé pour les partenaires internes d'AfricaMaVal, mais d'autres partenaires pertinents seront également invités. ACEN (représenté par Susanne Karcher) est fier de contribuer aux discussions de panel portant sur les profils de recyclage des pays africains ainsi que sur les opportunités d'amélioration des chaînes de valeur des matières premières secondaires. Solutions Africaines : Fertilisant Agroécologique pour des sols et des Communautés Sains

L'Union africaine et la République du Kenya organisent un sommet dédié à la santé des sols et aux engrais du 7 au 9 mai 2024 à Nairobi. En conjonction avec cet événement, l'Alliance pour la souveraineté alimentaire en Afrique (AFSA) a obtenu de l'UA l'opportunité de tenir un événement parallèle de 90 minutes le 8 mai et de gérer un espace d'exposition tout au long du sommet. Pour se préparer à cela, un webinaire et une conférence de presse de 2 heures ont été programmés pour le Vendredi, Mai 3, 2024 à 14h00 CET. Cette session est conçue pour affiner l'approche collective et préparer des réponses pour le sommet.

Le webinaire abordera plusieurs sujets, notamment les inconvénients de l'agriculture industrielle traditionnelle et les avantages de l'adoption de l'agroécologie, le rôle des gouvernements locaux dans la promotion des politiques agroécologiques, et les processus impliqués dans la production, la certification et les tests de biofertilisants au Kenya et en Zambie. De plus, les stratégies du Kenya en matière de systèmes agricoles holistiques et la transition vers l'agroécologie seront examinées. Les discussions mettront également en lumière la relation entre la santé des sols et le changement climatique, les progrès dans la technologie des biofertilisants en Afrique, et la recherche sur les biofertilisants en Afrique australe.

Appel Ouvert 2024 : AGYLE Recherche 40 Jeunes Leaders

AGYLE, le programme des jeunes leaders africains-allemands, en est à sa quatrième édition et invite les candidatures de jeunes leaders talentueux provenant d'Éthiopie, du Ghana, du Rwanda, du Sénégal, de la Tunisie et d'Allemagne.

Cette année, le thème de travail du programme AGYLE est : Économie circulaire - Comment les jeunes leaders façonnent la transformation. Le programme s'adresse aux jeunes leaders âgés de 40 ans et moins qui jouent un rôle proactif dans la transformation vers une économie circulaire et qui travaillent sur des solutions innovantes dans des secteurs tels que le textile, la construction, l'électronique, l'emballage et l'alimentation. La date limite de candidature est le Dimanche, Mai 12, 2024.

Les Subventions ASSP

L'ambassade des États-Unis à Abuja a ouvert un concours pour que les organisations soumettent des propositions pour réaliser des projets dans le cadre du programme de petites subventions spéciales de l'ambassadeur pour l'auto-assistance (ASSH). Les organisations éligibles comprennent les organisations non gouvernementales et à but non lucratif légalement enregistrées et basées au Nigeria, ainsi que les groupes locaux de base établis. L'ASSH attribuerait 10 subventions à de petits projets d'un budget maximal de USD 7000. La date limite de candidature est le Vendredi Mai 31, 2024.

Le Programme Circulaire pour les Innovateurs Africains

Le Programme des Innovateurs AfriCircular est une initiative du Fonds pour l'Économie Circulaire en Afrique (ACEF) de la Banque Africaine de Développement et de l'Alliance pour l'Économie Circulaire Africaine (ACEA), destinée à faire avancer l'économie circulaire en Afrique. Le programme jouera un rôle clé dans la revitalisation de la vitalité économique des Micro, Petites et Moyennes Entreprises (MPME) en Afrique. L'organisation mise en œuvre, Impact HUB, soutiendra de jeunes entrepreneurs de trois pays - Rwanda, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana pour faciliter la croissance et revitaliser la croissance verte en Afrique. Centre de la CEDEAO pour les Énergies Renouvelables et L'Éfficacité Énergétique (ECREEE)

En janvier 2024, la Fondation ACEN a lancé un projet avec le Centre de la CEDEAO pour les énergies renouvelables et l'efficacité énergétique (ECREEE) intitulé "Projet pilote régional sur l'économie circulaire - Transition vers une économie circulaire de l'énergie propre à travers l'optimisation des chaînes de valeur à haute intensité énergétique dans des secteurs à fort impact". Les pays du projet sont le Bénin, le Nigeria et le Sénégal. La première partie du projet sera consacrée à l'identification des chaînes de valeur les plus pertinentes pour la mise en œuvre de solutions énergétiques propres et circulaires. La deuxième partie sera axée sur la recommandation de solutions énergétiques propres et circulaires pour ces chaînes de valeur spécifiques. Dans le cadre de ce projet, des ateliers seront organisés dans chaque pays cible avec des parties prenantes pertinentes des secteurs de l'énergie et de l'agriculture.

Les Participants du WCEF2024 ont Visité l'Année 2027 !

Dans le cadre de la préparation du WCEF2024, Sitra a rassemblé plus de 100 participants du Forum mondial sur l'économie circulaire pour une session de simulation. Les participants ont imaginé, vécu et conçu ensemble un avenir possible. Ils ont mené une expérience nationale de mode de vie circulaire en 2027. Cette session a été rejointe par Susanne Karcher, co-fondatrice de l'ACEN. L'équipe a produit un rapport à partir des engagements avec les participants.

Les Compétences Africaines en Réparation et en Réutilisation, une Stratégie Cruciale pour l'Économie Circulaire

La Fondation Ellen MacArthur a publié un rapport sur l'une des compétences anciennes de l'Afrique consistant à tirer le meilleur parti des matériaux grâce à la réparation et à la réutilisation. L'article met en lumière les initiatives des entrepreneurs africains qui commercialisent cette compétence, les opportunités qu'elle présente dans l'économie circulaire et, surtout, comment le Nord global pourrait tirer des enseignements de cet exemple
